Aalborg Youth School is a public organisation which mainly works with youngsters in the age group between 13-19 years.
We offer both professional and free time activities within areas such as:
European as well as international awareness in general
Equal opportunities
Anti racism/xenophobia
Health - Sports
Arts and culture
Anti-drugs/substance abuse
Social exclusion
Media and communications
Those are only some of our many operating areas, and as a learning organisation we are always looking for new areas and methods as well as we try to follow up on the many different needs of today’s youngsters.
The organisation is the biggest of its kind in our country with just about 500 employees, 2.000 active members in youth clubs and 4.000 youngsters who take part in our many teaching and cultural offerings. Its structure is decentralised having an administrational department operating four larger departments under which there are a total of 31 youth clubs including 6 junior clubs (age group 10-13 years) - all together those make up for the youth club facilities. Other than that, we have 5 youth houses. Each of those functions as an open project, teaching and culture house giving youngsters the possibility to practice to play music, as well as it gives access to a record studio for those who want to make a CD production. Furthermore the youngsters have the opportunity to create film productions as well as broadcasting their own tv and radio shows.
For sports we have two houses; one for cross way and one for skate boarding. We also offer a special Adventure Line offering Mountain bikes, canoeing, both ordinary and sea canoeing, surf boarding and much more. In the teaching area we have a school for youngsters in the 8th, 9th and 10th grade offering full time teaching using mainly workshop training methods to give youngsters a more practical access to learning. This has been a growing success from the beginning as the students achieve a school-leaving certificate as in the ordinary school system. Finally, Aalborg Youth School has a department for bilingual youngsters. This department is for foreign youngsters, who have come to Denmark at mature age (age group 17-25 years) and here they are offered Danish language teaching + other subjects as well as different kinds of projects. Approximately 175 youngsters are enlisted at this department.
Our international work is mainly based on the European Programme YOUTH. We have been involved in the EVS for some years now. Our EVS structure is based on one HEI covering three different projects. The projects all starts in August and finishes at the end of July. We plan on four volunteers every year.
Outside the EU programme YOUTH, we have several projects going on, like wild nature trips, Comenius projects, jobswob, an international environment project etc..
Over the past years, the international dimension has been one of our five actual political working areas. This has meant that all our departments, to some extend, today are all involved with the international field.
